Chef Charlie Palmer’s Astra, located in the iconic D&D building, will be transitioning to a brand new café and private events venue following extensive renovations this summer. In addition to a larger footprint, the 14th floor space will have a new name (Upper Story by Charlie Palmer), a new design, and all new menus. Gut renovations began in early June following Astra’s final events in late May. Upper Story by Charlie Palmer will add 765 square feet of space to the existing floor plan for a total dining and entertaining area of over 2700 square feet. The opening date of the new venue is anticipated for early October 2014.
For private events, Upper Story can be divided into two separate spaces accommodating 70 guests and 90 guests for seated affairs and 160 when combined. Additionally, the venue will boast state-of-the-art audio visual equipment and as well as a green room or bridal suite for last minute preparations. Menus can be customized for each event to meet the needs of the host--be it a bride, fundraising committee or corporate planner.
In the same fashion as its predecessor, Upper Story will be a lunchtime haven for designers, clients, and both corporate and residential neighbors offering up soups, salads, sandwiches, entrees, fresh juices, smoothies, infused teas and more. Large café tables for meetings and material review will sit in front of Upper Story’s open expanse of windows, looking out at the unrivaled Manhattan views beyond. The addition of textured leather banquettes along the room’s northern most walls will be a sought after spot for lunching.
Of the change, Chef Charlie Palmer says, “Astra played host to thousands of events and celebrations over the course of 17 years. Upper Story will continue in that spirit, but will elevate the space by delivering an enhanced guest experience in terms of events, meetings, weddings, and of course, food and beverage.”
Renowned interior designer, Scott Salvator, is spearheading the design of the space. Salvator’s recent projects include the redesign of the Carlyle Hotel’s iconic Carlyle Café, The Ardsley, the Sherry Netherland and numerous upscale private residences. Taking a modern yet classic approach, Salvator will be introducing a soft color palette with dark nuances that complement both the daytime and nighttime views beyond Upper Story’s 1000-square foot balcony. Upper Story’s design is intended to be a blank canvas to inspire unique themes for private events, fundraisers, weddings, and more. Working in tandem with Salvator is Leed Architect Mark Bixler of the architecture firm Manuel Zeitlin Architects.
Astra and Aureole veteran, Adam Bordonaro, will lead the culinary program as Chef de Cuisine with Katherine Leong, former Events Director of Benchmarc Events, offering her expertise on the sales and operations side. Upper Story will open to the public for lunch (Monday – Friday) and private events daily in early October 2014.
