Featured Varietal for Thursday, September 4:
Tannat: Monte de Luz, Reserva, San Jose, Uraguay
Tannat is one of the most well known varietals in Uruguay and was brought from the basque influenced regions in Southwest France. It is also know by Harriague as it was brought by the basque settler Pascual Harriague. Tannat is a dark thick skinned varietal and name is thought to be derived from the word Tannin.
Domaine Monte de Luz Tannat Reserva was created through the collaboration of Jacques Lesgourgues, proprietor of Laubade Armagnac and Gabriel Gallot, reputed geologist. Uruguay presents a unique terroir for winemaking. The Monte de Luz vineyards are located on 90 acres of the Mahoma mountain at an elevation of 500 feet and the Reserva is created from the best five acres of Tannat grapes. After aging in French oak barrels for 12 months, it develops a complex nose of blackberry, cherry, tobacco and chocolate. The palate is mouth filling and textured with balanced fruit and acidity.
This $39 bottle will pair nicely with our hearty game dishes, like bone in ribeye, or filet.
