Nominated by the magazine's panel of five renowned chefs—José Andrés, Michael Mina, Charlie Palmer, Eric Ripert, and Masa Takayama—each rising star will compete in a series of epicurean events for inaugural award
MALIBU, CA (October 4, 2012) – To honor emerging talent in the culinary world and explore the future of fine dining and cuisine, luxury lifestyle authority Robb Report, in partnership with BMW and Dom Pérignon, has challenged five of the world's preeminent chefs to nominate a next-generation protégée to take part in a one-of-a-kind culinary competition to determine the "top new culinary master," crowning the best of the next generation.
Highlighted in Robb Report's October issue, the Culinary Masters Competition—which the magazine has announced will be repeated annually—features a diverse lineup of rising stars nominated by worldwide culinary masters José Andrés, Michael Mina, Charlie Palmer, Eric Ripert, and Masa Takayama. Preparing five-course meals for a VIP judging panel of selected readers, these highly talented young culinary artisans will be rated for their mastery of technique, creativity and innovation.
Following are the five contenders for the prestigious New Culinary Master award:
• Katie Button, a specialist in modern Spanish cuisine, is the owner and chef of Cúrate in Asheville, N.C. (nominated by Chef Andrés).
• Gavin Kaysen, a standard-bearer of haute cuisine, is the executive chef at Café Boulud in New York City (nominated by Chef Ripert).
• Matt Abergel, an Asian-cuisine impresario, is the owner and chef of Yardbird in Hong Kong (nominated by Chef Takayama).
• Dante Boccuzzi, with his global take on American cuisine, is the owner and chef of several Cleveland-area restaurants (nominated by Chef Palmer).
• Mourad Lahlou, creator of a modern and personal version of Moroccan cooking, is the owner and chef at Aziza in San Francisco (nominated by Chef Mina).
Judges will discuss and rate their dining experiences with each of the nominating master chefs, who offer stories, personality and perspective. Ultimately, the judges' ratings will be tabulated and their choice of Robb Report's New Culinary Master will be announced in the magazine's January issue, iPad and tablet apps, websites and in video. The concept is also slated to appear in 12 other countries where Robb Report is published.
The competition dinners have begun at three stunning private homes and estates in Los Angeles and, later this month, will be held at the exclusive Ritz Carlton Central Park and the "SoHi Room" atop the Trump Soho. The dinners will also benefit the favorite charities of the master chefs. The charities are City Harvest, City Meals-on-Wheels, World Central Kitchen, Feeding America, and All Stars Helping Kids.
This fall, each master chef and his nominee will be featured in the home page media baron RobbReport.com, highlighted on the Robb Report Facebook page, and presented to followers on Twitter. All online postings will provide a link to the October-issue article introducing the virtuoso-and-nominee pairs. Special editorial coverage of the events and related content will be accessible via robbreport.com/culinarymasters.
Robb Report's app content, with its stunning visuals, is presented in an innovative and user-friendly manner that enhances luxury enthusiasts' experience of the magazine. The iPad version provides access to all print-edition content when viewed in portrait (vertical) format, and it unlocks a wide range of interactive enhancements when viewed horizontally.
