The Perfect Recipe to Start the Morning

The aroma of French toast in the air! A delicious casserole like this is the ideal way to start the day. It goes great with eggs and crispy bacon. Here's how to make this delicious breakfast, courtesy of Remington Camp Cooking by Charlie Palmer.

 Ingredients:

One freshly baked white loaf (lightly crusted and tender within)

Two cups of half-and-half

one cup of milk

Four large eggs

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Two tsp of pure vanilla essence

Two tablespoons of raw sugar

Two tablespoons of chilled unsalted butter cut into ¼-inch pieces

Making French Toast:

1. Preheat oven temperature to 350°F. Butter should be used to lightly oil a 9 x 13-inch ovenproof baking dish.

2. Slice the bread into 1-inch thick pieces. Then, cut each slice into quarters to create little rectangles that resemble toast. Either leave the bread out overnight or roast it gently in an oven set on low heat to avoid mushiness.

3. Combine the half-and-half, milk, eggs, vanilla essence, and cinnamon in a medium-sized bowl.

4. Add the bread to the custard mixture in batches, folding each one gently as you go, and let the bread soak for about two minutes.

5. Once the small toasts are saturated, remove them from the custard mixture and let them drain for a short while before distributing them evenly in the prepared casserole dish. Over the top, scatter the raw sugar.

6. Continue until the casserole dish is filled to the brim. Drizzle any leftover custard mixture onto the bread and garnish with chopped butter.

Bake for 25 to 35 minutes, until the bread is golden brown around the edges and the custard is set.

Drizzle with syrup and serve warm for an added sweet treat. Savor your mouthwatering French Toast Casserole now!
